Is the Meghalaya government truly committed to eradicating the drug problem?

Shillong, June 26 (NationPress) Chief Minister Conrad Sangma of Meghalaya declared on Thursday that the state's administration is fully dedicated to eradicating the drug crisis affecting the region, and significant efforts have been underway to combat this issue.

Sangma was present at the state-level commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking held at the State Convention Centre in Shillong. The event was organized by the Social Welfare Department in partnership with Meghalaya Police, Meghalaya AIDS Control Society, and the Drug Reduction, Elimination and Action Mission (DREAM).

The gathering focused on the theme “Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment and Recovery for All,” bringing together leaders, frontline workers, and community members.

In his keynote speech, the Chief Minister presented a detailed and visionary strategy to address the drug issue in Meghalaya. He stressed that the government is committed to holistic recovery that encompasses health systems, education, youth engagement, and robust community collaborations.

He remarked, “This is not solely a law enforcement problem; it is a public health, social, and developmental concern. DREAM is our collective mission to combat this challenge — as a state and as a community.”

Additionally, the Chief Minister highlighted the state's accomplishments in law enforcement, mentioning that in the last three years, the Meghalaya Police have confiscated over Rs 1,000 crores worth of narcotics, including heroin, ganja, opium, and crystal meth.

Over 1,031 drug-related cases have been registered, with more than 422 already charge-sheeted. Specialized units like the ANTF are being further enhanced, and new technologies such as drug scanners and trained canine units are being implemented.

He called upon every citizen, educators, community leaders, NGOs, and families to unite in this battle.

“Let’s not blame one another. Let’s collaborate. The youth of Meghalaya are our most valuable asset, and we cannot allow drugs to jeopardize their futures. We will fight this battle together — and we will prevail,” he urged.

Before concluding, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma led the attendees in a solemn pledge as part of the National Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.

The government’s flagship initiative, the Drug Reduction, Elimination and Action Mission (DREAM), is a comprehensive, multi-faceted program aimed at addressing both the supply and demand aspects of substance abuse.

Under the DREAM initiative, the government has allocated Rs 50 crores over five years to support rehabilitation centers, particularly those managed by faith-based and community organizations. Additional funding will be raised as necessary.

Through DREAM, the government collaborates closely with village councils, youth clubs, SHGs, and faith-based organizations to enhance awareness, facilitate treatment and rehabilitation, and ensure that no one is excluded.
