New Delhi, Jan 9 (NationPress) Trinamool Congress leader Majeed Memon responded on Friday to Salman Khurshid’s comments endorsing the demolition initiative near the Faiz-e-Elahi Masjid in central Delhi, clarifying that the Congress leader's remarks represent his personal stance and do not necessarily indicate the official position of the Congress party.
In reaction to Khurshid’s support for the government’s actions, Memon stated, “This is Salman Khurshid’s individual opinion. Anyone is entitled to their perspective, and he has expressed his. Whether Congress aligns with this viewpoint is yet to be determined. While legal actions are generally welcomed, if such actions incite unrest, conflict, or jeopardize the legal system, they must be halted. Such occurrences are unacceptable.”
Memon’s comments arise amidst political responses to the demolition drive executed near Turkman Gate under court instruction. The operation aimed to eliminate alleged encroachments adjacent to the Faiz-e-Elahi Masjid, which led to violent confrontations as a large crowd gathered at the site.
Authorities reported that stone-throwing by demonstrators injured several police officers, prompting the deployment of additional security forces to restore order. Officials indicated that the situation is now stable, while investigations and legal proceedings related to the violence are still in progress.
Earlier on Thursday, while speaking to IANS, Congress leader Salman Khurshid defended the demolition actions, asserting that they were executed in accordance with judicial directives.
“The court has made its ruling, and the matter is settled. No harm has come to the worshippers or the mosque. We should commend the government for acting appropriately. Where illegal constructions existed, actions were taken as per the court's orders. Everyone should accept the court’s decision, and there should be no cause for dispute,” Khurshid stated.
Nevertheless, Memon emphasized that while lawful actions should be upheld, they should not lead to public unrest or violence. He warned that any measures resulting in clashes or disrupting public order require reevaluation, regardless of their legal justification.
In addition, the Trinamool leader made wider political critiques, denouncing the role of governors appointed under the BJP-led government.
“The governors have also become mere pawns of the BJP, which is regrettable. I must respectfully state that the office of the governor holds great dignity and honor. However, the manner in which governors have been appointed by the BJP government suggests that most are affiliated with the RSS and aligned with the BJP. This undermines the constitutional framework, and a governor acting in favor of a political party does not serve the interests of democracy,” Memon remarked.
