What Led to the Chaos During Messi's Event? Investigation Uncovers Mismanagement
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 16 (NationPress) A committee established by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to investigate the severe mismanagement during Lionel Messi's recent event at Salt Lake Stadium has revealed that a significant lack of supervision contributed to the ensuing chaos. This information emerged on Tuesday following inspections of various sections of the stadium, conducted by the committee led by Justice Asim Kumar Roy (retd), over the past two days.
Justice Roy addressed the media on Tuesday morning to share updates on the investigation's progress. He mentioned that inquiries were made regarding who held responsibility on the day of Messi's appearance. Furthermore, the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been proposed to delve into the Yuva Bharati incident.
The investigation committee pinpointed a lack of adequate oversight as a major factor in the incident. "The question arises, how were food and water bottles allowed onto the field? Normally, water bottles are prohibited. Yet, numerous broken chairs, damaged gates, and discarded bottles were discovered on the field. Reports indicate that stalls were set up inside the stadium, but the situation remains under investigation. Those responsible that day should have ensured proper oversight. We have requested departmental action against them from the government," he stated.
The committee, presided over by the retired judge, submitted its initial report regarding the Yuva Bharati incident on Monday night. Committee members emphasized that both the police and the Sports Department bore responsibility for overseeing Messi's visit to Kolkata.
The Chief Minister's investigation committee has demanded a detailed report from the relevant officials within 24 hours, seeking clarification on who from the police or Sports Department was in charge during the incident and what preparations were made prior to the visit.
Additionally, Justice Roy indicated that the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the entire incident is recommended. The government will officially determine the SIT's composition, with suggestions to include senior police officials.
Sources reveal that since the incident took place in Bidhannagar and is currently under investigation by the Bidhannagar police, the establishment of an SIT is being considered to guarantee the investigation's impartiality and transparency.
The retired judge further noted that during their inspection of the stadium, they assessed whether chairs could be easily thrown and if screws were loose. They also aim to uncover how food and water bottles breached stadium restrictions.
"A thorough investigation is essential to uncover these details. That responsibility lies with the police. Typically, police officers are present in the galleries and intervene during disturbances. It's unclear why this did not occur that day. Without concrete evidence, we cannot assign blame. We are scrutinizing every aspect. The full truth will emerge once the report is submitted," he added.
