Is It Shameful for Bengal? Should Mamata Take Responsibility for Messi Event Chaos?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 14 (NationPress) The BJP expressed its outrage on Sunday, labeling the grand event at Salt Lake Stadium in the northern outskirts of Kolkata, featuring the renowned Argentine footballer Lionel Messi, as a disgraceful episode for West Bengal.
The party insisted that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee must be held accountable for the disorder and poor management that ensued during the event.
This chaos erupted when frustrated fans, incensed by restricted access to Messi despite having paid what they considered to be inflated ticket prices, erupted in violence within the stadium.
As the situation deteriorated, law enforcement had no choice but to implement a large-scale lathi charge and deploy the Rapid Action Force (RAF) to regain control. Due to the turmoil, Messi departed the stadium ahead of his planned schedule.
BJP leader Dilip Ghosh remarked to IANS, "This incident is a disgrace for West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee must accept responsibility; a mere apology won't suffice. Those who invested their money should receive compensation."
"All involved must face consequences, and legal action should be initiated against everyone—be it police, officials, or ministers present during the event. They all deserve to be held accountable," he further stated.
In a related development, earlier on Saturday, Satadru Dutta, the main organizer of the event, was apprehended at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata while trying to flee the city.
During the incident, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was en route to the stadium. However, upon learning of the disruptions and vandalism, she ordered her driver to turn back. Shortly after, she declared the formation of a judicial committee to investigate the mismanagement that led to the chaos.
"The committee will carry out a thorough investigation into the incident, assign responsibility, and propose measures to avert similar situations in the future. I once again extend my sincere apologies to all sports enthusiasts," the Chief Minister stated.
