Aizawl/Kohima, June 19 (NationPress) The northeastern Indian states of Mizoram and Nagaland have been reported to exhibit the highest rates of HIV prevalence in the country, according to officials on Thursday.
As per the findings, the HIV/AIDS adult prevalence rate (ages 15 to 49) in these two states significantly surpasses the national average of 0.20 percent.
The National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) data reveals that the adult HIV prevalence in Mizoram is 2.73 percent, while Nagaland records 1.37 percent.
This prevalence rate is markedly higher than that found in the other 35 states and Union Territories.
NACO statistics indicate that four other northeastern states—Manipur (0.87 percent), Meghalaya (0.43 percent), Tripura (0.37 percent), and Arunachal Pradesh (0.25 percent)—also exceed the national average.
Conversely, only two northeastern states—Assam (0.13 percent) and Sikkim (0.11 percent)—report prevalence rates lower than the national average.
Mizoram's Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Lalrinpuii, has emphasized the urgent need for coordinated efforts to address the alarming rise in HIV/AIDS cases within the state.
During a meeting of the governing body of the Mizoram State AIDS Control Society (MSACS) in Aizawl, the Minister stated that the current situation demands serious attention and multi-sectoral interventions.
Dr. Jane Rinzuali Ralte, Project Director of MSACS, shared that 2,069 new cases of individuals living with HIV (PLHIV) were recorded at the state's 14 Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) centres during the 2024-2025 period.
Of those receiving treatment, an impressive 97.7 percent have achieved viral suppression, thus significantly reducing the risk of transmission.
Dr. Ralte noted a consistent decline in new HIV/AIDS cases over the past five years in Mizoram, yet the state still holds the top position in HIV prevalence.
In its multifaceted approach, MSACS has conducted HIV testing and treatment literacy campaigns in de-addiction centres and intensified Information, Education and Communication (IEC) outreach across all 11 districts last year. Candlelight vigils were also organized to honor those who lost their lives to HIV/AIDS.
Additionally, the Mizoram State Blood Transfusion Council (MSBTC) received the esteemed ‘Excellence in Blood Donation 2023–24’ award, recognized as the best-performing council in the northeastern region.
Meanwhile, Tripura's Chief Minister Manik Saha has recently highlighted the need to build a healthier society by addressing critical issues such as drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, and child marriage. As a dental surgeon, Saha stressed the importance of tackling the surge in drug abuse, particularly among injectable drug users, which has contributed to the rise in HIV/AIDS cases in the state.
