New Delhi, Feb 16 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on Sunday regarding the tragic loss of lives in a stampede that occurred at New Delhi Railway Station, claiming at least 15 lives.

A large crowd of travelers, eager to board trains to Prayagraj, resulted in the unfortunate incident late Saturday night.

PM Modi took to social media platform X to convey, "I am deeply saddened by the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My heartfelt thoughts are with those mourning their loved ones. I wish a swift recovery for the injured,"

He further mentioned that the authorities are providing assistance to all impacted by this tragic event.

The chaos began around 8 p.m. on platforms 14 and 15, as passengers awaited trains bound for the sacred city of Prayagraj to participate in the Maha Kumbh Mela.

Officials reported that extra security forces have been deployed to manage the situation at New Delhi Railway Station. Additionally, at least four fire engines were dispatched to the area.

During the turmoil, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reassured the public on social media that the situation was under control.

"The situation at New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) is stable. Both Delhi Police and the Railway Police Force (RPF) are present. The injured are being treated at hospitals. Special trains are being arranged to handle the unexpected influx," the Minister posted on X.

Meanwhile, Delhi Lt Governor V.K. Saxena remarked: "A tragic incident has occurred, resulting in loss of lives and injuries due to chaos and stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My sincere condolences go out to the victims' families. I have discussed with the Chief Secretary and Police Commissioner to ensure the situation is addressed effectively."

"The Chief Secretary has been instructed to activate DDMA (Disaster Management) protocols and deploy relief teams. All hospitals are prepared. I have directed the Chief Secretary and Police Commissioner to be present on site to oversee relief efforts. I am continuously monitoring the operations," he added.

The Northern Railway reported on X that "The heavy rush situation at New Delhi Station is under control. Delhi Police and RPF are on site. The injured are being treated. Special trains are being run to manage the unexpected crowd."

Earlier this week, passengers at a railway station in Bihar had broken train windows in a desperate attempt to board, and similar incidents were reported at other stations in Bihar.
