New Delhi, Feb 16 (NationPress) In the wake of the tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station that resulted in 18 fatalities, Congress figures Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra extended their heartfelt condolences to the victims' families and wished for the swift recovery of those injured.
"The news regarding the loss of lives and injuries due to the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station is profoundly tragic and upsetting. I express my deepest sympathies to the grieving families and wish for the quick recovery of the injured. This event once again underscores the failure of the Railways and the government's lack of sensitivity. Given the influx of devotees heading to Prayagraj, superior arrangements should have been in place at the station. The government and authorities must ensure that no one loses their life due to mismanagement and negligence," the Leader of Opposition remarked in a post on X.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge voiced his sorrow on social media, stating, "The reports of many individuals losing their lives in a stampede at New Delhi Railway Station are extremely sorrowful. The footage emerging from the station is heart-wrenching. The Narendra Modi government's attempt to conceal the facts surrounding the deaths at New Delhi Railway Station is both shameful and unacceptable. We demand immediate transparency regarding the number of deceased and injured, and that the identities of the missing be confirmed. Our sincerest condolences to the families affected. The injured must receive prompt medical attention."
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also expressed her grief, stating, "The reports of numerous lives lost, including those of women and children in the stampede due to the crowd at New Delhi Railway Station, are deeply saddening. May God provide peace to the departed souls. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the swift recovery of the injured."
BSP Chief Mayawati condemned the incident, remarking, "It is tragic that due to severe negligence on the part of the railways, numerous individuals lost their lives and were injured in a stampede amid the assembly of people at New Delhi Railway Station heading to the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh. My deepest sympathies go to the victims. The government must take action against those responsible and extend full support to the victims."
A horrifying stampede occurred late on Saturday night at New Delhi Railway Station, where a massive crowd gathered to board trains to Prayagraj for the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela. The incident transpired around 8 p.m. on platforms 14 and 15, with passengers becoming frantic due to overcrowding.
DCP Railway KPS Malhotra attributed the chaos to multiple factors, stating that a spike in passengers coupled with delays of two trains led to the tumult.
"Essentially, at one moment, a train was delayed, and additionally, there were extra tickets sold for Prayagraj. Within a brief span of approximately 10 minutes, the arrival of more individuals and the delays of two trains were the primary causes of the pandemonium," said Malhotra.
As the situation unfolded, emergency responders, including police and medical teams, were rapidly dispatched to assist those affected. Authorities are currently investigating the reasons behind the stampede and are working to support the families of the victims.
