New Delhi, February 16 (NationPress) The Indian Railways has unveiled a compensation package of Rs 10 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives, Rs 2.5 lakh for passengers who sustained serious injuries, and Rs 1 lakh for individuals who experienced minor injuries during the stampede that unfolded at the New Delhi Railway Station late Saturday night.

At least 18 individuals have tragically lost their lives, with more than a dozen others injured as a result of the stampede at the railway station.

The chaos ensued as a large crowd of travelers, eager to board trains heading to Prayagraj for the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela, surged onto platforms 14 and 15.

This stampede was triggered by a sudden influx of passengers attempting to catch evening trains to the sacred city, leading to extreme overcrowding and pandemonium.

While the majority of victims have been identified, authorities have reported that two fatalities remain unknown. Among those deceased were at least three minors.

DCP Railway KPS Malhotra described the incident's cause, indicating that the primary factor leading to the stampede was a surge in passenger numbers due to delays in two trains.

Previously, the Railways had stated that special trains were being operated to manage the unexpected influx at New Delhi Railway Station. Four special trains were deployed to alleviate the overwhelming crowd.

Moreover, it was confirmed that all scheduled trains are operating on their usual timetables.

In the meantime, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav expressed his sorrow over the tragic loss of life in the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station.

He stated, “I am profoundly saddened by the unfortunate stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. The entire team is dedicated to assisting those impacted by this heartbreaking incident.”

Investigations into the reasons behind the stampede are underway, with enhanced security measures enacted at the station to avert similar incidents in the future.
