New Delhi, Feb 18 (NationPress) Members of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) staged a protest here on Tuesday in response to the recent stampede at New Delhi Railway Station that claimed the lives of 18 individuals and left many others injured. They demanded accountability from those deemed responsible for the alleged negligence that led to this tragedy.
The demonstrators chanted slogans and attempted to breach police barricades during the rally in central Delhi.
Throughout the protest, IYC activists displayed placards and vocally called for action against those implicated in the incident.
Previously, on Monday, following the instructions of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee President Devender Yadav, a formal complaint was lodged with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to investigate the 18 fatalities in the stampede that occurred on February 15.
The complaint was submitted by the Legal and Human Rights Department (LHRD) of the DPCC, urging the NHRC to establish an inquiry committee to investigate the unfortunate incident.
In his complaint, Yadav emphasized that the disaster was a result of the negligence displayed by the Railway authorities and security personnel, who failed to manage the large crowd of devotees headed to Prayagraj for a holy dip during the Maha Kumbh.
He raised concerns about how the Railways could sell 1,500 tickets per hour for passengers traveling to Prayagraj without implementing necessary measures for crowd control or proper coach arrangements.
Yadav insisted that the NHRC investigation must identify those responsible and ensure stringent actions against them.
The DPCC delegation included LHRD Chairman Sunil Kumar, Booth Management Chairman Rajesh Garg, and various advocates.
In the meantime, the government has initiated a two-member committee to investigate the stampede.
This committee, which includes Narsingh Deo, PCCM/Northern Railway, and Pankaj Gangwar, PCSC Northern Railway, has ordered the preservation of video footage from platforms 14 and 15, where the large crowd had amassed.
On Sunday, the investigative panel also reviewed the site of the tragedy and began gathering statements from witnesses to align them with the CCTV footage.
The Railways announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased, Rs 2.5 lakh for those seriously injured, and Rs 1 lakh for individuals with minor injuries.
