New Delhi, April 8 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a strong condemnation of opposition parties regarding the recently enacted Waqf Amendment Act, accusing them of engaging in "appeasement politics."
After the Bill’s approval in Parliament, PM Modi spoke on the fervent debates surrounding the legislation, encouraging the nation to move beyond the outdated tactics of the past. He stated, "We cannot allow the politics of the 20th century to obstruct the advancement of the 21st century. The uproar over the Waqf Act arises from appeasement politics."
During an event in Delhi, PM Modi pointed out the issues raised during the discussions and elaborated on the challenges posed by the 2013 amendments to the Waqf Act, asserting that these changes were made to placate extremist groups and take advantage of land resources. He remarked that the new Waqf law transforms fear into dignity, especially for marginalized individuals within the Muslim community.
The Prime Minister praised Parliament for enacting a law that benefits society as a whole and the Muslim community. He characterized the legislation as a crucial achievement in the NDA government’s initial 100 days, aimed at fostering social justice and protecting the rights of underprivileged Muslims, including women.
“The (previous) Waqf law had instilled fear. Now it guarantees dignity for everyone, particularly the marginalized in the Muslim community. I commend the Parliament for creating an excellent law that serves the interest of the entire society and the Muslim community,” he stated.
“The discourse on the Waqf law represents the second longest in our parliamentary history. Debates on the Bill extended over 16 hours across both Houses, complemented by 38 joint parliamentary committee (JPC) meetings, totaling 128 hours of discussion. Furthermore, nearly 1 crore online suggestions were submitted by citizens nationwide. This highlights that democracy extends beyond the confines of Parliament; it's being enriched and strengthened through active public involvement,” he added.
PM Modi expressed his appreciation to Parliament for passing the law, which he believes will serve the majority of Muslims in India. He emphasized the need to acknowledge the historical distrust surrounding land ownership, whether pertaining to religious sites or government properties, and praised the new law for addressing these issues.
PM Modi reiterated that the new Waqf Act safeguards the rights of impoverished and female Muslims, marking a significant advancement in achieving equality and justice.
