New Delhi, April 17 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday commemorated former PM Chandrashekhar on his birth anniversary, emphasizing that he consistently placed national interest at the forefront of his political endeavors.
In a touching homage to the late leader, PM Modi shared on his X handle that he is cherished for his contributions towards social harmony and nation-building.
"I pay my humble respects to former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar ji on his birth anniversary. He always prioritized national interest in his political journey. His dedication to social harmony and nation-building will remain etched in our memories," PM Modi wrote on his X handle.
He also shared two images of the esteemed leader.
In his tribute, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath remarked that Chandrashekhar was a prominent advocate for the oppressed and marginalized, a beloved politician, and a nationalist intellectual.
CM Yogi expressed on his X handle in Hindi (translated as), "A humble tribute to the strong voice of the oppressed and marginalized, popular politician, and nationalist intellectual, former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar ji, on his birth anniversary! Chandrashekhar was born on July 1, 1927, in the village of Ibrahimpatti in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district. He was drawn to politics from his student days and was recognized as a passionate leader with revolutionary zeal.
He embarked on his parliamentary journey after winning a seat from Uttar Pradesh on a PSP ticket in 1962. He remained a Member of Parliament, except for the interval between 1984 and 1989. He joined the Indian National Congress in 1964 but distanced himself during the 1975 Emergency. He was detained under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act, 1975, during which he wrote his 'Jail Diary'.
He received the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award in December 1995.
As the President of the Janata Party, he undertook a padayatra from Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu to Rajghat in New Delhi from January 6, 1983, to June 25, 1983. He advocated for social justice, equality, and the upliftment of the underprivileged.
Chandrashekhar was inaugurated as Prime Minister on November 10, 1990, with backing from various political factions, including Congress, following the resignation of Vishwanath Pratap Singh.
He resigned in March 1991 when Congress withdrew its support. Chandrashekhar passed away in Delhi on July 8, 2007, at the age of 80.
