Bhopal, Aug 6 (NationPress) The Madhya Pradesh Motor Vehicle Taxation (Amendment) Bill 2025 was approved on the seventh day of the ongoing Monsoon session of the Assembly on Wednesday.
Presented by the BJP-led Madhya Pradesh government for discussion in the House on Tuesday, the Bill sparked an engaging debate among members from both the Opposition and the ruling party.
The state government has implemented stricter penalties for unpaid vehicle taxes, which include 'motor vehicle tax', 'goods tax', and 'additional tax' for consumers.
Under the revised provision, a fourfold outstanding amount will be recovered if taxes remain unpaid for an extended period.
During the discussion on the Bill, the Opposition Congress backed the government's decision to impose penalties on overdue vehicle taxes, highlighting that the state's transport department has become riddled with corruption.
Senior Congress MLA from Jabalpur East, Bala Bachchan, stated, "Simply instituting penalties won't suffice unless the state administration effectively recovers dues." He mentioned that vehicle owners in Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, and Jabalpur divisions owe nearly Rs 2,500 crore in unpaid taxes.
State Transport Minister Uday Pratap Singh noted that a 4% penalty on delayed tax payments will be enforced under the new regulations.
He also indicated that vehicles transporting passengers will incur a fine of Rs 1,000 per seat for non-compliance with traffic laws.
Earlier that day, Congress MLAs staged a unique protest at the Assembly, alleging widespread irregularities in the state government's recruitment process.
Several Congress legislators donned police-like uniforms and caps to symbolically protest the alleged scam in the 2024 Madhya Pradesh Police Constable Recruitment Examination.
They called for an independent judicial inquiry into the issue.
Leader of the Opposition and Congress figure Umang Singhar accused the BJP-led state government of enabling corruption in the recruitment system.
"The Madhya Pradesh Police Constable Recruitment scam is Vyapam part-2. The Opposition demands a judicial investigation into this significant issue. Such deeply entrenched irregularities cannot occur without internal support from the government," Singhar told the media.
The ongoing scam, currently under investigation by the Madhya Pradesh Police, has resulted in over 20 FIRs being filed across various districts as of June this year.
More than a dozen individuals have been arrested, with over 100 suspects reportedly under scrutiny.
The Assembly's Monsoon session commenced on July 28 and is set to conclude on August 8.
