Indore, June 12 (NationPress) A shocking incident was reported where a 65-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death by her own grandson, who subsequently concealed her body inside a storage box in the bed, according to police on Thursday.
The suspect, 28-year-old Vikas Gauhar, was apprehended within hours of the incident after attempting to flee to Rajasthan.
Additional DCP Alok Sharma revealed that the tragic event unfolded in Salvi Mohalla of Indiranagar late Tuesday night.
The victim, Shanti, a retired muster roll worker for the municipal corporation, relied on her modest pension to support her grandchildren.
According to IANS, Sharma stated, "We were alerted to the discovery of a deceased 65-year-old woman found in a trunk at her home in Indra Nagar, Salvi locality. Acting promptly, the police arrived, conducted an investigation, and summoned the FSL team to collect forensic evidence."
"The deceased was identified as Shanti Dhananjay, spouse of Kishan Dhananjay. During investigations, her body was located inside a storage trunk situated on the bed," he added.
Shanti had taken the responsibility of caring for her grandson Vikas's two young children—a 7-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy—after his wife left him a year prior due to his addiction and abusive behavior.
Vikas, struggling with unemployment and substance abuse, frequently demanded money from his grandmother.
Around 4 am on the night of the incident, he allegedly requested money from Shanti to purchase liquor. When she refused, he reportedly strangled her while his children were asleep in the house.
After committing the crime, Vikas concealed her body in the storage compartment of the bed. The following day, Shanti's daughter contacted the police, expressing concern over her mother's sudden disappearance and Vikas's suspicious behavior.
She noted that he had locked the house and evicted her after a brief conversation.
When questioned by relatives and authorities, Vikas provided inconsistent statements, raising further suspicion. Upon inspecting the residence, police found the bed in disarray.
When they opened the storage compartment, they discovered Shanti's body hidden inside.
Vikas fled the scene before police arrived but was located and arrested within an hour. During questioning, he confessed to the crime.
Police confirmed that Vikas's father, Dhanraj Gauhar, had passed away years ago, and Shanti had been the sole provider for the family through her pension.
The suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues.
