In a significant development on Nov 27, Rajya Sabha MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney urged C.P. Radhakrishnan, the Vice-President of India and Chancellor of Panjab University in Chandigarh, to expedite the announcement of the university's upcoming Senate elections.

AAP MP Malvinder Singh Kang has also reached out to Radhakrishnan, requesting a meeting to discuss the preservation of the university's statutory independence.

Sahney expressed appreciation towards the Vice President for his involvement regarding the retraction of a prior notification that proposed the dissolution of the Graduate Constituency from the Senate.

He emphasized the rising anxieties among students and stakeholders about the delay in announcing new Senate election dates.

According to various media sources, the Vice Chancellor has already proposed election dates and is seeking their prompt approval.

“The Senate is essential for maintaining the university’s democratic governance. An early announcement of the election schedule will ensure transparency, prevent further unrest, and maintain continuity in the university's academic and administrative operations,” Sahney stated.

On the other hand, MP Kang applauded the Union government for retracting its notification dated October 28 regarding the restructuring of the Senate and Syndicate.

However, he clarified that this action does not completely address the concerns raised by students. In his correspondence, he noted that Panjab University, founded in 1882, holds national significance, and its autonomy is vital for its democratic structure and academic standing.

“Any modifications must comply with the Panjab University Act, 1947, and the constitutional framework of India,” he stated.

Drawing from his past experiences as a student leader and Senate member, Kang expressed a deep emotional connection to Panjab University and an understanding of the aspirations and concerns of its students, faculty, and alumni.

He requested an early appointment with the Vice President to discuss university matters in detail and seek his guidance as Chancellor.

Kang expressed confidence that under the Vice President’s leadership, Panjab University will continue to thrive as a beacon of excellence and inclusivity.

Point of View

It is essential for universities to uphold their democratic structures while ensuring they address the concerns of their stakeholders, specifically students.
