One labourer was killed and four others remain trapped after a well under excavation caved in at Biharpurwa village in Madhya Pradesh's Panna district on Tuesday, 26 May, around 11:00 am IST. The sudden soil collapse buried five workers deep inside the pit, triggering a large-scale rescue operation that continued through the night.

How the Collapse Happened

Seven labourers had been engaged for the past 10 days to dig a well in the agricultural field of local resident Binnu Ahirwar in the Nayapurwa hamlet of Biharpurwa village. At the time of the accident, two workers had surfaced to drink water, while five remained at depth. Without warning, loose upper layers of soil gave way, burying all five men under tonnes of earth.

The deceased has been identified as Rajkumar Yadav, whose body was recovered by rescue teams. The four still missing are identified as Chunnu Yadav, Ashish Yadav, and Chunwad Pal; the fifth name had not been officially confirmed in initial reports.

Rescue Operations Under Way

A large contingent of police personnel, Revenue Department officials, local administration staff, and villagers has been working round-the-clock to clear the debris. Medical teams and ambulances have been stationed at the site in anticipation of further recoveries.

Rescue efforts have been severely hampered by the unstable soil structure at the site. Local residents noted that the terrain consists of extremely loose earth, making deep excavation hazardous and slowing the pace of debris removal significantly. Despite the conditions, teams are persisting in hopes of reaching the trapped workers alive.

The tragedy has raised serious questions about whether proper permission was obtained for the excavation, whether soil testing and geotechnical inspections were conducted beforehand, and whether adequate safety measures — such as shoring or protective supports — were in place for the workers.
