New Delhi, March 26 (NationPress) The Central Government has summoned all Members of Parliament (MPs) for a meeting on Wednesday to thoroughly discuss the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024.
This meeting will feature a one-hour briefing for MPs regarding the proposed changes to the Waqf laws, taking place from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in Coordination Room No. 5 of the Parliament.
The government aims to clarify the details of the bill prior to its presentation in Parliament, particularly in light of escalating opposition.
The Waqf Amendment Bill has ignited controversy nationwide, with numerous groups alleging the Central Government is acting against the interests of the Muslim community.
Several Muslim organizations, notably the influential Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, have voiced their objections, labeling the bill as anti-Muslim. They contend that the amendments may result in mismanagement of Waqf properties and threaten the autonomy of the Muslim community in overseeing its charitable endowments.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has been particularly outspoken in its opposition, announcing plans for large-scale demonstrations across the country.
On March 26, a protest is scheduled in Patna's Gardanibagh, followed by another in Vijayawada on March 29.
AIMPLB's spokesperson, Qasim Rasool Ilyas, condemned the bill, asserting it was introduced on communal grounds and infringed upon the rights of Muslims. He further claimed that the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), which reviewed the bill, acted independently, neglecting the concerns of opposition parties and Muslim organizations.
The Joint Parliamentary Committee, after several sessions and hearings, delivered its report on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. The 31-member committee proposed multiple amendments to the legislation, which were approved by a majority of 15 BJP MPs against 11 opposition members.
Nonetheless, the opposition has voiced significant dissent, raising concerns regarding the bill's effects on Muslim religious and charitable institutions.
