Can Mumbai's Mayor Be Elected Without Congress' Backing?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Jan 13 (NationPress) Amidst the fierce competition for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the President of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) and Member of Parliament, Varsha Gaikwad, has boldly stated that the Congress party will be pivotal in determining the next Mayor of Mumbai.
During her remarks on Tuesday, Gaikwad emphasized that control over the municipal corporation will rest with Congress, asserting that no party will succeed in appointing a Mayor without their endorsement.
She refuted allegations that the Congress party has been marginalized in the Mumbai civic elections, stating, “The political dynamics in Mumbai are evolving. We are optimistic about securing a considerably larger number of seats this time. Following the elections, no one will be able to establish a Mayor in the BMC without the Congress' participation.”
Gaikwad also criticized the ongoing narrative of “Marathi vs Hindutva” promoted by the Mahayuti (comprising BJP and Shinde Sena) and the factions led by Thackeray’s MNS/Sena. She highlighted that Congress’ focus remains on the essential infrastructure and the daily challenges faced by Mumbaikars.
She remarked, “While others are embroiled in battles over religion, caste, and language, our priority is development. Mumbai is grappling with critical issues such as traffic congestion, water shortages, waste management, and air pollution. We seek a Mayor who is engaged with the community, not just functioning from the Mantralaya.”
“Congress has formed alliances with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), Rashtriya Samaj Paksha (RSP), and the RPI (Gavai faction). This coalition is designed to unify Dalit, Muslim, and minority votes, which will significantly enhance Congress' seat count compared to previous elections,” Gaikwad explained.
In a sharp critique of the state government, she accused the ruling Mahayuti of overlooking Mumbai's needs and “selling off” land for various developments. Gaikwad asserted that Congress has a longstanding history of enhancing Mumbai’s landmarks, including the Sea Link and key highways, promising that the party would advocate for retaining Mumbai’s resources for its residents.
With the BMC elections approaching on January 15, Gaikwad’s statements indicate Congress' determination to assert itself as a critical player in the country's wealthiest municipal body.
