Kolkata, April 17 (NationPress) The leaders of Suti and Samserganj Police stations in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal, regions significantly impacted by the violence stemming from protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, were replaced on Thursday.
“The action was taken as the areas under the supervision of these police stations experienced the most severe disturbances. Of the three fatalities linked to the violence, two occurred in Samserganj and one in Suti. It was decided that both stations would be managed by more seasoned and higher-ranking officers,” stated a senior district police official.
Sources indicated that the primary concern regarding the former leaders of these police stations was their failure to adequately anticipate the protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, which escalated into violence.
Nonetheless, the state police have not clarified if the officers' removal was due to complaints regarding their intelligence shortcomings, as their transfers have been described as “routine.”
However, a high-ranking state police official confirmed on Thursday that the allegations of intelligence failures are currently under review.
The state police noted that given both police stations have been upgraded, their previous leaders, who held sub-inspector ranks, needed to be replaced.
The newly appointed inspectors-in-charge are Subrata Ghosh for Samserganj Police Station and Supriya Ranjan Maji for Suti Police Station, both holding the rank of inspector.
