Did Former TDB Chief N. Vasu Receive Statutory Bail in the Sabarimala Case?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kollam (Kerala), Feb 11 (NationPress) A vigilance court in Kollam, Kerala granted statutory bail to N. Vasu, the former President and Commissioner of the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB), in connection with the Sabarimala gold misappropriation case on Wednesday.
This development occurred after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) failed to submit a charge sheet within the legally mandated 90-day period following Vasu's arrest, which entitles him to default bail.
Vasu, who was taken into custody on November 11, 2025, is the third individual implicated in the alleged gold-plating irregularities and is now the fifth person to be granted bail.
Prior to this, the primary accused, Unnikrishnan Potti, and Murari Babu had also been granted bail.
Once all procedural requirements are fulfilled, Vasu, a member of the CPI-M, will be released from custody later today.
The case revolves around allegations that during his tenure as Devaswom Commissioner, gold plates were misrepresented as copper plates and presented to the Board for discussion.
The SIT asserts that these actions are part of a larger scheme involving temple assets.
However, investigative delays in obtaining scientific test results have hindered the completion of the charge sheet within the required timeframe.
Since his arrest, Vasu has been residing in the medical section of Poojappura Central Jail due to health issues.
His previous appearance in court while handcuffed during remand hearings sparked significant controversy.
In related developments, the court has extended the remand of other accused individuals, including Pankaj Bhandari, Govardhan, and K.S. Baiju, for another 14 days.
Investigators have referred to a letter from Potti to the then TDB President requesting permission to use gold extracted from the plates for a wedding.
Despite having knowledge of the excessive gold in Potti's possession, Vasu allegedly forwarded the letter to the Thiruvabharanam Commissioner without taking appropriate action, as per the SIT.
Vasu has consistently maintained his innocence, denying that any plates were removed during his administration.
The court previously noted that discrimination among the accused is indefensible, and the delays by the SIT have significantly impacted the legal proceedings of the case.
