Bihar floods: BJP chief Nitin Nabin donates ₹6.35 lakh, 3 months' salary to CM relief fund
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President Nitin Nabin on Friday, 18 September 2026, donated ₹6.35 lakh — equivalent to three months of his salary as a Rajya Sabha MP — to the Bihar Chief Minister's Relief Fund, as severe floods continue to batter the state. The gesture came as Nabin highlighted the scale of the crisis and the relief measures being coordinated by the state government and the Centre.
Scale of the Flood Crisis
Severe flooding has affected an estimated 50 lakh people across 88 blocks in 15 districts of Bihar this year. The state government has so far provided food to approximately 1.62 crore people through more than 1,000 community kitchens, according to Nabin. The breadth of the disaster places it among the most significant flood emergencies Bihar has faced in recent years.
Government Relief Measures
Nabin stated that the Bihar state government had already disbursed more than ₹550 crore in direct financial assistance to flood-affected families, at a rate of ₹7,000 per family. He added that relief camps, community kitchens, medical facilities and fodder arrangements for livestock had been set up across affected areas. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed and are on standby for rescue operations.
Centre's Involvement
Referring to the Union government's engagement, Nabin noted that Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had visited flood-affected areas, met survivors and reviewed ongoing relief and rescue operations. The Centre's presence on the ground, Nabin said, reflects coordinated federal support for the state during the crisis.
Crop Damage and Farmer Assistance
Crop damage assessment is currently underway across affected districts to determine the quantum of compensation required by farmers who have suffered agricultural losses. Nabin indicated that the government machinery was working to ensure assessments were completed without delay so that aid could reach farmers promptly.
Nabin's Commitment
Nabin assured flood-affected families that all possible assistance would continue to be extended. He said the flood situation was being continuously monitored and that both state and central authorities remained focused on ensuring timely relief delivery. This comes amid mounting pressure on governments across flood-prone states to demonstrate accountability in disaster response and fund utilisation.
