The tragic accident transpired late on Saturday night between 10 Mile and Peducha in Kohima district. All the victims and injured were affiliated with the Chümoukedima Ao Baptist Church, according to the Chief Minister.
Reportedly, five women were killed and more than ten others injured when their bus veered off the road near Dzudza Bridge within the jurisdiction of Tsiesema Village in Kohima district.
The bus, which was transporting over 40 church members returning from a revival program in Mokokchung, encountered a mechanical failure, as stated by police.
The injured were promptly taken to the Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR) in Dimapur for treatment, with several in critical condition.
To recover the bodies trapped beneath the overturned bus, an excavator was brought to the scene.
Assistance was provided at the accident site by volunteers from the Northern Angami Youth Organisation (NAYO), alongside police and district officials, to evaluate and manage the situation.
Additionally, the youth from NAYO and Tsiesema Village generously donated shawls to cover the deceased.
The victims were identified as A. Amongla (76), Imtimenla (58), Asangla Pongen (52), Bendangla Jamir (52), and the youngest casualty, Yangerinla (35). A mass funeral service was conducted on Sunday at the Chümoukedima Ao Baptist Arogo.
