Kohima, April 5 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio, on Saturday emphasized the importance of understanding one's own identity, customary laws, and honoring one's ancestors during the festival celebrations marked by peace and unity.
He also committed to establishing a women’s working hostel and a Konyak Union office at the Konyak heritage complex.
The Chief Minister, alongside Union Minister of State for Education and Development of North Eastern Region, Sukanta Majumdar, officially inaugurated the Konyak Heritage Complex in Mon town, which is situated in Mon district, approximately 330 km away from the state capital, Kohima.
Rio expressed gratitude to all civil societies and the district administration led by Deputy Commissioner Ajit Kumar Verma of Mon, along with Leangha Village, for their support in successfully completing the complex.
He indicated that the complex would be transferred to the Department of Underdeveloped Areas (DUDA) as a government agency, while appealing to the community to take good care of it.
The Chief Minister urged the community to protect, preserve, and promote the Konyak Heritage Complex.
The North Eastern Council (NEC), under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), allocated Rs 24 crore for the heritage site.
The state government has also invested in various projects within the complex, including road construction.
Union Minister Majumdar expressed his delight in participating in this event, witnessing the splendid traditions and culture of the Konyak tribe.
He remarked that Nagaland is truly a land of festivals, with various celebrations throughout the year, and that the Konyak, being one of the largest and most significant tribes in Nagaland, possesses a rich cultural heritage.
He underlined that agriculture plays a vital role in festival celebrations and serves as the backbone of society.
The Union Minister noted that the festival not only celebrates tradition but also acknowledges its substantial contribution to the nation’s cultural diversity, while promoting the rich legacy of the Konyak.
Earlier, the Chief Minister unveiled the Monolith. The event commenced with a traditional Konyak welcome ceremony and the ceremonial inauguration of Konyak Aoleang Monyu.
Special performances were showcased by the Pongchao Cultural Troupe from Arunachal Pradesh, the Tai Ahom Cultural Troupe from Assam, as well as cultural troupes from Leangha Village, Changnyu Village, and Wakching Village.
