The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Chennai Zonal Unit arrested a couple on 24 August after allegedly recovering three kilograms of hashish from their possession near the Porur toll plaza in Chennai. The contraband, estimated to be worth ₹75 lakh, was reportedly intended for trafficking to Sri Lanka.

Who Was Arrested

The arrested individuals have been identified as Sivagamisundari and her husband Gurumurthy. According to the NCB, Sivagamisundari was a close associate of Angoda Lokka, the deceased Sri Lankan gangster allegedly involved in organised crime and international drug trafficking networks.

This is not her first brush with the law. She had previously been arrested by the Tamil Nadu Police's Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) in connection with a case registered in 2020, which pertained to the alleged fabrication of identity documents to enable Lokka to stay illegally in India. Lokka reportedly lived under a false identity in Coimbatore before dying in 2020, after which the CBCID launched an extensive investigation into his suspected criminal operations in the state.

How the Seizure Unfolded

Acting on specific intelligence about the movement of narcotics, an NCB team intercepted the couple near the Porur toll plaza earlier this week. A search of their possession allegedly led to the recovery of the three-kilogram hashish consignment. Preliminary investigation indicated the drugs were destined for Sri Lanka.

The agency described the seizure as significant given Sivagamisundari's alleged ties to Lokka's transnational criminal network. Investigators are now working to trace the source of the hashish and identify its intended recipients across the border. Authorities are also examining whether a broader transnational trafficking syndicate was involved in procuring and moving the contraband.

NCB Chennai's 2026 Crackdown: By the Numbers

The latest arrest is part of a sustained enforcement push by the NCB's Chennai unit in 2026. Since January, the unit has seized approximately 2,916.4 kg of ganja, 77.7 kg of hashish oil, 1.8 kg of amphetamine, 13 kg of hashish, and 2,799 LSD blots. A total of 48 people have been arrested in connection with various narcotics cases during this period. The combined estimated value of drugs seized by the unit so far this year stands at around ₹27.80 crore.

The Sri Lanka Drug Trafficking Link

This case highlights an enduring concern for Indian enforcement agencies — the use of Tamil Nadu's coastal geography as a conduit for narcotics moving between South Asia and Sri Lanka. The alleged involvement of a figure with direct links to a known Sri Lankan organised crime network adds a transnational dimension that investigators say warrants deeper scrutiny. The case is likely to draw coordination with central agencies and possibly Sri Lankan authorities as the probe advances.
