Kolkata, June 27 (NationPress) The National Commission for Women (NCW) has proactively responded to the distressing incident involving the rape of a law college student that occurred on the college grounds on Wednesday night. In connection with this case, three individuals, which include one former student and two current students of the college, have been apprehended.
In a statement released on Friday, the NCW requested a comprehensive report from the Commissioner of Police (CP) of Kolkata, Manoj Kumar Verma, and mandated that this report be submitted to the commission within three days.
According to the statement, NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar expressed significant concern regarding the case and instructed Verma to initiate an immediate and thorough investigation as per the relevant regulations outlined in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
“She emphasized the necessity for the victim to receive complete medical, psychological, and legal support, alongside compensation as per Section 396 of BNSS. The Commission has requested a detailed action-taken report within the stipulated three-day period,” the NCW statement indicated.
While Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has not yet commented on the incident, the All India Trinamool Congress has condemned the occurrence and praised the Kolkata Police for their swift action in arresting the three suspects.
In their statement, the party criticized the BJP and the central government for their inaction regarding the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill, which was passed in the West Bengal Assembly following the tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata last August.
“This tragedy highlights the critical necessity for the implementation of the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill to establish robust deterrents against sexual offenses, emphasizing the importance of rapid investigations, expedited trials, and severe penalties. It's regrettable that the @BJP4India Government at the Centre has not made any effort to facilitate its implementation. Our hearts ache for the significant trauma faced by the victim. The State Administration, under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Smt. @MamataOfficial, is committed to providing every conceivable support to the victim during this challenging period. Justice will prevail,” the statement from the Trinamool Congress affirmed.
Meanwhile, Sukanta Majumdar, the BJP's state president in West Bengal and the Union Minister of State, asserted that the primary suspect is an active student leader affiliated with Trinamool Congress and has connections with prominent leaders of the ruling party. He voiced concerns that there may be attempts by the administration to suppress this incident, similar to actions taken in the case of the R.G. Kar rape and murder tragedy.
