Assam NDA mandate reflects trust in development work, says AGP chief Atul Bora
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) President and Assam Minister Atul Bora on Wednesday, 20 May said the sweeping mandate secured by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections was a direct reflection of public confidence in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led coalition government's development record in the state. Bora made the remarks in Guwahati ahead of the first session of the newly constituted Assam Assembly.
An Unprecedented Verdict, Says Bora
Speaking to reporters, Minister Bora described the scale of the NDA's electoral victory as historically significant for post-Independence Assam. 'The people of Assam have given a huge mandate to the NDA alliance. After Independence, Assam has rarely witnessed such a decisive public verdict while forming a government,' he said.
Bora attributed the result directly to the governance record of the alliance, particularly crediting Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who led the state from 2021 to 2026. 'This mandate proves that the people appreciated the developmental work carried out during the NDA government's tenure, particularly under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in the last term,' the minister added.
NDA Proposes Ranjit Kumar Dass for Speaker
Bora also confirmed that the NDA alliance has formally nominated senior leader Ranjit Kumar Dass for the post of Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly. Nomination papers have been submitted with the backing of the BJP, AGP, and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) — the three principal partners of the ruling coalition.
'Nomination papers have already been submitted proposing the name of Ranjit Kumar Dass. The BJP, AGP and Bodoland People's Front have jointly proposed and supported his candidature,' Bora told reporters. Several senior leaders and newly elected members of the legislative assembly (MLAs) from coalition parties were present at the filing, he noted.
All 126 MLAs to Take Oath on Thursday
The first session of the newly constituted Assam Assembly is set to begin on Thursday, 21 May. All 126 newly elected MLAs are expected to take their oath of office during the opening proceedings of the House.
The four-day session is anticipated to include the introduction of several key Bills and policy discussions by the incoming government. The NDA alliance, led by the BJP, retained power in Assam with a comfortable majority, with the AGP once again emerging as a significant regional coalition partner.
Context: NDA's Continued Hold on Assam
The BJP first came to power in Assam in 2016, ending over a decade of Congress rule, and retained the state in 2021 under Chief Minister Sarma's leadership. The latest election result, described by Bora as unprecedented in post-Independence Assam politics, consolidates the NDA's position as the dominant political force in the state. Notably, the AGP — a regional party with deep roots in Assam's identity politics — has now partnered with the BJP across multiple successive governments, underscoring the durability of the alliance.
With the new Assembly set to convene and a Speaker nomination already in motion, the new government's legislative agenda is expected to take shape in the coming days.
