New Delhi, Sep 9 (NationPress) The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced today that it is carefully observing the deteriorating circumstances in Nepal, where significant protests have erupted, primarily driven by the nation’s Gen Z demographic.
In an advisory issued this morning, the MEA stated, "Indian nationals in Nepal should exercise caution and follow the instructions and guidelines provided by the Nepali authorities."
The Indian government has expressed its profound sorrow regarding the loss of lives amid the violent upheaval over social media restrictions, particularly affecting young demonstrators, and has offered condolences to the grieving families.
Tensions escalated across Nepal following a nationwide ban on 26 social media and messaging platforms, provoking widespread anger among young citizens. Tens of thousands took to the streets in Kathmandu and other major cities, protesting against what they perceive as an attack on freedom of expression and increasing governmental corruption.
What began as peaceful protests reportedly descended into chaos, resulting in at least 19 fatalities due to the violence.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the MEA noted, “We are closely monitoring the developments in Nepal since yesterday and are deeply saddened by the loss of many young lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased. We also wish a speedy recovery to those who were injured.”
As a close neighbor and ally, India urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and seek resolution through dialogue.
“We hope that all concerned will exercise restraint and address issues through peaceful means and dialogue,” the MEA added.
Furthermore, the Ministry has issued an advisory for Indian nationals in Nepal, in light of the curfews imposed in Kathmandu and several other cities.
"Indian nationals are urged to exercise caution and strictly adhere to the guidelines provided by the Nepali authorities," the statement emphasized.
Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli’s government is facing significant backlash following the widespread protests that erupted on Monday. Last week, the Nepal government enacted a ban on social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat, Reddit, and WeChat, citing non-compliance with new registration regulations.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli expressed deep regret over the loss of life and announced the establishment of a high-level investigation committee to examine the incident.
“I am extremely saddened that citizens lost their lives during today’s protest. I extend my deepest condolences to the families and relatives who lost their loved ones in this unimaginable incident,” PM Oli stated.
The United Nations has raised concerns regarding the escalating situation, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres urging both the Nepal government and protesters to engage in peaceful dialogue.
“Nepal enjoys a vibrant democracy and an active civic space. It’s crucial for the government and demonstrators to come together to resolve these issues peacefully,” declared UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.
“We are monitoring the situation with grave concern. Authorities must ensure that the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are upheld.”
Reports indicate that police have employed live ammunition and rubber bullets against protesters, leading to at least 19 deaths.
Some of the 26 banned social media and messaging apps reportedly resumed operations later on Monday.
Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the Geneva-based Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, stated, “We have received numerous alarming allegations of unnecessary or disproportionate use of force by security forces during protests.”
She emphasized, “Nepal enjoys a lively democracy and active civic space” and called for “a prompt and transparent investigation” into claims of police violence.
