Shillong, May 8 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K Sangma, visited the New Shillong Township on Thursday to review the progress of significant projects aimed at alleviating congestion in the old Shillong city.
The Chief Minister, accompanied by officials from the Planning and Urban Affairs Department, assessed the construction of the new Secretariat at Umsawli.
This essential infrastructure is being built at a budget of Rs 1188 crore, with an anticipated completion date set for mid-2027. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on January 21, 2025.
“This remarkable building will establish a strong foundation for efficient administration. Its design has been carefully crafted to integrate sustainability and cultural elements with modern architecture. I eagerly await its completion,” remarked the Chief Minister.
Upon its completion, this site is expected to serve not only as an administrative hub but also significantly reduce the congestion in the city of Shillong.
Additionally, Sangma noted that several internal roads within the New Shillong Township are either completed or underway. This road network will connect various important projects in the area, enhancing overall connectivity with Shillong.
During his visit, he also reviewed the construction of the Unity Mall. He inspected the completed Ummir to Mawkhanu Road, which serves as a vital link between the administrative and educational sectors of the township.
He discussed plans for avenue plantation along the road to enhance the visual appeal of the region.
Earlier, the Chief Minister evaluated the newly constructed Polo Mall, part of the Smart City Initiative. The mall is ready for operation, with ongoing arrangements for leasing shops that will feature entertainment venues, a food court, and retail spaces.
While reviewing the infrastructure development for the Wahumkhrah Riverfront Development Project, he emphasized its significance in terms of environmental sustainability, urban beautification, and the forthcoming national games.
This initiative involves improving infrastructure along the riverfront, particularly focusing on the river's cleanup.
“I am optimistic about completing Phase 1 of the riverfront project soon. In Phase 2, we will develop the area for shops, dining establishments, parking facilities, and accommodations,” Sangma added.
He encouraged the public to collaborate with the government in maintaining the cleanliness of rivers such as Wahumkhrah.
“Together, we can achieve our shared objectives,” the Chief Minister concluded.
