NHRC Urges Action Against Cannon Misuse at Raisen Fort
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
On March 12 in Raisen, Priyank Kanoongo, a member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), convened with top officials including the District Magistrate, the Superintendent of Police (SP), and the Regional Director to address the troubling issue of illegal cannon discharges from Raisen Fort.
During the discussions at the regional office of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Kanoongo highlighted the significant concern surrounding the cannon's misuse and emphasized the need for immediate preventive measures from the relevant authorities.
He expressed alarm over the apparent lack of coordination among officials, which has permitted individuals to exploit this ASI-protected historical site, instilling fear in local residents through unlawful cannon fire.
Kanoongo advocated for improved collaboration among agencies and called for accountability regarding those responsible for the cannon’s discharge and the officials who overlooked this situation.
Post-meeting, he stated, “We have instructed the relevant officials to pinpoint those at fault and implement necessary corrections. The truth is, if strict measures are not enforced, even current legal frameworks may prove inadequate. Rectifying this issue is essential for the administration, our nation, and the wellbeing of Raisen's populace.”
This meeting follows notices issued by the NHRC to the District Magistrate and SP of Raisen, the ASI's Regional Director in Bhopal, and the Secretary of the Union Ministry of Culture concerning allegations of unauthorized cannon usage at the fort.
The notice was prompted by a complaint detailing unauthorized daily cannon firing by certain individuals at this protected monument, which is under ASI jurisdiction.
The complainant also referenced a social media video that allegedly shows individuals making incendiary remarks in favor of foreign entities, raising alarms about national security and communal peace.
The complainant urged for a thorough investigation into the incident, strict legal repercussions for the youths involved, a complete ban on the cannon's use at the site, and accountability for the officials who allowed access to the weapon.
