New Delhi, Dec 11 (NationPress) On Thursday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against 11 individuals involved in the theft of approximately 4,000 kg of explosives by armed members of the CPI (Maoist) terrorist organization during their transit to a stone quarry in Rourkela district, Odisha.
As per an official release from the NIA, all 11 accused have been indicted under multiple provisions of the UA(P) Act, BNSS, Arms Act, and the Explosive Substances Act. The investigation revealed that these individuals played a significant role in the criminal conspiracy, including the planning and execution of the theft of around 200 packets of explosives, each containing 20 kg.
The explosives were en route to Maoist strongholds located in the Saranda Forest of Jharkhand when the local police intercepted the vehicle transporting the materials on May 27. The vehicle and its driver were forcibly taken by 10-15 armed Maoists toward a nearby jungle, which serves as a stronghold for the organization.
During a combing operation on the Gandhamardhan Hill range along the boundary of Balangir-Bargarh district, the explosives, along with Maoist uniforms and other items, were recovered. This operation was a collaborative effort involving the Special Operation Group (a force created to combat Left-wing extremism in Odisha), the CRPF, the Jharkhand Jaguars, and the District Voluntary Force.
Since taking over the investigation from local police in June, the NIA has discovered that this substantial quantity of explosives was intended for use against government forces, including police and security personnel, through acts of terrorism. The agency emphasized that this theft is part of a broader conspiracy orchestrated by the CPI (Maoist) to undermine national security.
