New Delhi, July 26 (NationPress) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has submitted a supplementary chargesheet against two individuals related to the November 2023 Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion that targeted a polling team in Chhattisgarh’s Gariyaband district.

This attack, orchestrated by the banned CPI (Maoist) group, resulted in the death of an Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) head constable and was a violent effort to undermine the democratic process.

With the inclusion of Dhanesh Ram Dhruv, a government school headmaster, and Ramswrup Markam, the current Sarpanch of Chhotegobra Panchayat, the total number of accused in this case has now reached 12.

The NIA had earlier filed its first chargesheet in December 2024, naming ten individuals under case RC-05/2024/NIA/RPR. As per the agency’s investigations, this explosion was a reaction to a poll boycott call from the CPI (Maoist) and was executed by members of the outfit’s Gobra Dalam unit.

The attack took place when a polling team, escorted by security personnel, was returning from Badegobra village after completing their polling duties during the state assembly elections.

The newly charged individuals are accused of playing significant roles in facilitating this attack. Dhruv is said to have aided Maoist cadres in creating propaganda materials, including posters and banners that called for a boycott of the elections.

Markam, on the other hand, is accused of obtaining and supplying incriminating materials such as wires, switches, and firecrackers used in constructing the IED.

Investigations by the NIA have indicated that the conspiracy was led by senior leaders of the CPI (Maoist): Central Committee members Ganesh Uikey and Manoj, along with Special Zonal Committee Member Satyam Gawade.

The execution of the attack relied extensively on logistical and financial assistance from overground workers (OGWs) in the villages of Badegobra and Chhotegobra. The agency took charge of the investigation in February 2024 and continues to probe the extensive network behind this attack. Officials have suggested that more arrests and revelations may be forthcoming as the inquiry advances.

This case highlights the ongoing threat posed by Maoist insurgency in regions sensitive to elections and the vital role of community-level collaborators in facilitating such violent acts.
