Srinagar, Feb 25 (NationPress) The National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT) to initiate a six-month course focused on drone technology and establish a DGCA-certified drone training facility, as stated by an NIT spokesperson on Tuesday.
The spokesperson mentioned, “The six-month certification program will emphasize artificial intelligence and security within the realm of drone technology, offering a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip participants with advanced skills in these vital fields. This program will blend theoretical knowledge with hands-on training to close the gap between academia and industry, thereby improving the employability of local students.” The MoU signing ceremony occurred in Srinagar, attended by Tulika Pandey, Group Coordinator and Scientist-G of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and Dr. M.M. Tripathi, the Director General of NIELIT, on Saturday.
This collaboration will launch a six-month certification course in drone technology alongside a joint DGCA-certified drone pilot training centre. This centre will provide training that meets industry standards compliant with DGCA regulations, ensuring comprehensive and recognized certification for aspiring drone pilots, the spokesperson added.
A collaborative six-month certificate course on UAV/Drone technology, named 'SwaYaan', will also be introduced under MeitY's national initiative for developing human resources in Unmanned Aircraft Systems/Drone and Related Technology.
'SwaYaan' aims to enhance and fortify India’s UAS/Drone ecosystem.
NIT Registrar, Atikur Rehman, stated that the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the institute will offer this six-month certification course for global participants, with electives available to B.Tech students from any discipline as an open elective.
“The industrial component of the course will incorporate internships for students, further boosting job opportunities for local youth. The future lies with drones, so it is our responsibility to engage the youth with this leading technology,” the registrar emphasized.
NIT Srinagar was founded in 1960 as the Regional Engineering College (REC), Srinagar, with Wajahat Habibullah IAS serving as its first chairman from 2004 to 2014. It was among the first eight Regional Engineering Colleges established by the Government of India during the first Five-Year Plan.
