Bengaluru, July 10 (NationPress) A thorough investigation led by Dr. K.S. Ravindranath, Director of the Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences in Bengaluru, assessed the recent reports of sudden deaths among young adults in Hassan District of Karnataka from May to June 2025. The findings reveal that there is no alarming increase in heart attacks or fatalities in the area.

The tragic incidents of cardiac arrests in Hassan District have raised significant alarm statewide and attracted national media attention.

In response to the rising concerns and extensive media scrutiny regarding sudden cardiac deaths among young adults, the state government launched a formal investigation.

A committee was tasked with reviewing each of the 24 fatalities reported during May-June 2025 in Hassan District.

The report concluded, "An exhaustive examination of the heart attack and death statistics indicates no surge in sudden cardiac fatalities in the district, with figures remaining consistent compared to the preceding months in Hassan."

"Data analysis from the Jayadeva Institute, Bengaluru, and its affiliated centers in Mysuru and Kalaburgi over the last six months shows no upward trend in cardiac deaths. However, definitive conclusions about the cause of each death are hampered by insufficient autopsy data, clinical information, and limited family history," the report stated.

Out of the 24 cases studied, the report indicated that four were classified as non-cardiac deaths. Of the remaining 20 deaths, 10 were confirmed cardiac fatalities, while others had various heart-related issues.

More than 75 percent of the deceased exhibited one or more cardiac risk factors, including pre-existing heart disease (3), smoking (6), diabetes (7), hypertension (6), obesity (8), family history (3), and alcohol consumption (8).

The unexpected fatalities among younger adults highlight the increasing challenge of premature cardiovascular disease.

"This situation necessitates early cardiovascular screening initiatives and health education; implementation of mandatory investigation protocols, including autopsies for all sudden deaths in seemingly healthy young adults," the report emphasized.

The panel suggested that all out-of-hospital sudden cardiac deaths should undergo autopsy to confirm or dismiss cardiac causes; ensure the availability of ECG machines and emergency cardiac medications; provide CPR training for targeted groups like students, teachers, and gym trainers.

The report further recommended cardiac screenings for auto and cab drivers.

Point of View
