Indore, Jan 17 (NationPress) During a visit to the Bhagirathpura region in Madhya Pradesh, Congress leader and Lok Sabha Opposition Leader, Rahul Gandhi, stated on Saturday that he was present to "share the grief" of families affected by the tragic deaths caused by contaminated drinking water in the city, emphasizing that he was "not here to play politics".
"As a Leader of the Opposition, it is my responsibility to advocate for the people's voices, and I stand firm in my actions. The loss of life due to contaminated water is a dire issue. If some wish to label this as political maneuvering, they can do so, but I will always support those who are suffering," Rahul Gandhi asserted in response to accusations from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suggesting he was politicizing the situation.
BJP officials, including Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, accused Rahul Gandhi of using this tragedy for political gain.
Criticizing the BJP-led state government, the Congress leader noted that numerous individuals have succumbed to the effects of unsafe drinking water.
"I have interacted with the families impacted by the water crisis in Bhagirathpura. Several have lost loved ones, while others are gravely ill. I pledged that the Congress party would advocate for increased compensation for these families," he mentioned.
Additionally, Rahul Gandhi raised questions regarding the Smart City initiative, highlighting that many other cities are grappling with similar water accessibility issues as those experienced in Indore's Bhagirathpura.
He criticized the state government for its inability to ensure safe drinking water and clean air for its citizens.
"This is the so-called Smart City model where residents lack access to safe water and clean air. This problem extends beyond Indore and affects various other cities as well," he stated, standing alongside families who have suffered due to the consumption of contaminated drinking water.
Rahul Gandhi also pointed out that the residents of Bhagirathpura still lack access to clean water.
He noted that some repairs were initiated only after the media highlighted the issue.
Furthermore, he criticized the state government for not establishing accountability despite the tragic loss of life.
"People have died as a result of the government's failure to provide safe drinking water. The government must take responsibility for these fatalities," he remarked.
Later, Madhya Pradesh Congress Chief Jitu Patwari announced that all 24 families affected by the contaminated drinking water in Bhagirathpura would receive Rs 1 lakh in compensation from Rahul Gandhi.
He also mentioned that Madhya Pradesh Opposition leader and Congress member Umang Singhar contributed Rs 50,000 to each of the 24 families.
The state government has also allocated Rs 2 lakh to 21 families who lost members in this unfortunate incident.
