Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) chief coordinator Seeman's potential candidacy as a common opposition candidate in the upcoming Ambasamudram Assembly by-election in Tamil Nadu has effectively collapsed, with senior party functionaries and cadres mounting strong resistance to the idea of accepting support from the state's Dravidian majors. The proposal, which had gathered political momentum in recent weeks, has been shelved for now after widespread internal opposition.

How the Proposal Gained Ground

The idea reportedly took shape after sections of the opposition began exploring the possibility of projecting Seeman as a unified anti-government candidate to consolidate votes against the ruling dispensation. Political speculation intensified when Seeman was seen sharing the stage with Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president M.K. Stalin and Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin at separate public events — appearances that triggered discussions about a possible thaw in the historically adversarial relationship between the NTK and the DMK.

The debate gained further traction when Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol. Thirumavalavan publicly claimed that the DMK was considering backing Seeman as a consensus candidate. Thirumavalavan also remarked that Seeman, once among the DMK's most vocal critics, now appeared to have developed cordial ties with the party leadership.

Why NTK Functionaries Pushed Back

Despite the political buzz, the proposal found little support inside the NTK. Senior office-bearers reportedly argued that accepting electoral backing from either the DMK or the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) would directly contradict the party's long-standing policy of contesting elections independently — a position it has maintained for over 15 years.

Several party leaders are understood to have warned that any deviation from this stance risked alienating the NTK's core support base, which has backed the party specifically for its refusal to align with either Dravidian bloc. The argument, in essence, was that the short-term electoral gain of a bypoll contest was not worth the long-term ideological cost.

The 2026 Assembly Election Backdrop

Talk of Seeman contesting the bypoll had gained urgency among some party functionaries who saw it as an opportunity to revive the NTK's political standing after a bruising 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Seeman himself contested from Karaikudi and lost his deposit, while the party's overall vote share slid to approximately 4 per cent — a sharp fall from over 8 per cent recorded in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The emergence of TVK as a significant political force in the state has further complicated the NTK's electoral calculus.

Where Things Stand Now

With by-election dates yet to be formally announced, sources indicate that Seeman has, for the present, decided against pursuing the consensus candidacy in light of the internal opposition and the political controversy the proposal generated. The Ambasamudram seat remains a critical test for opposition consolidation in Tamil Nadu, and the NTK's withdrawal from the consensus framework leaves that effort without a clear focal point. How the remaining opposition parties proceed — and whether a credible alternative candidate emerges — will shape the contest's dynamics in the weeks ahead.
