New Delhi, Jan 30 (NationPress) Obesity has emerged as a critical issue among Indians across all age brackets, emphasized Dr. T. P. Lahane, a Padma Shri awardee, on Thursday.

In an interview with IANS, Dr. Lahane, the former Director of the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) in Maharashtra, praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his emphasis on fitness.

“The Prime Minister has highlighted a crucial aspect regarding obesity. Currently, 33 percent of the population is affected by this condition,” the expert remarked.

While the youth and children are particularly vulnerable, the doctor expressed that it poses a significant challenge for all age groups in India—ranging from 6 to 18 years and 20 to 55 years.

He observed that obesity is prevalent not only among urban dwellers but also in rural communities.

Dr. Lahane attributed the rise in obesity to factors such as junk food consumption, sedentary jobs, lack of physical activity, and extended hours spent on mobile devices.

He also highlighted that poor dietary habits characterized by low fiber and high oil consumption contribute to increased hunger and subsequent weight gain. He recommended limiting intake to “one to two tablespoons of oil daily, preferably coconut or mustard oil,” and advised against deep-fried foods laden with toxins.

Addressing obesity is vital for leading a longer and healthier life. This condition is linked to numerous health issues, including diabetes, hypertension, and cancer.

“To combat obesity, it’s essential to steer clear of junk food, reduce oil intake, and increase physical activity,” he stated.

Specifically, he recommended engaging in exercise after meals to help burn calories.

“Post-meal, we should focus on burning calories; dedicate one hour to physical activities of your choice, such as walking, gym workouts, or yoga,” he advised.

On January 28, PM Modi, while addressing athletes and delegates at the 38th National Games in Dehradun, underscored the significance of a healthy body as a foundation for a healthy mind, which is essential for a thriving nation.

During his address, PM Modi spoke passionately about the obesity crisis gripping India and the urgent need for action.

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, known for his rigorous fitness routine and disciplined lifestyle, has also supported PM Modi's call for a Fit India.
