Bhubaneswar, May 14 (NationPress) The Odisha Congress President Bhakta Charan Das vehemently criticized the state government on Wednesday regarding the Cabinet's decision to allocate 11.25% reservation for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC), labeling it as both disappointing and insufficient.
Das stated to IANS: “This decision falls short of being transformative. For centuries, the SEBC and OBC communities have faced injustice. Rather than upholding the full 27% reservation that is both mandated and sought after, the state has opted for a mere 11.25%, which is unacceptable.”
He highlighted that while the SC and ST communities have consistently advocated for a 40% reservation in technical education sectors such as medical, engineering, and pharmacy, the government has only proposed 20%, showing no meaningful enhancement.
“What is the rationale behind such a minimal offering?” he questioned.
Das accused the government of intentionally undermining the rights of SC, ST, and OBC populations in Odisha.
“This marks the final stage of betrayal. These communities are being systematically overlooked and oppressed,” he stated.
The Congress leader called for an immediate increase in the SEBC reservation to 27%, insisting that this should apply even to private institutions, particularly in government employment, education, and technical fields.
“If the government does not guarantee 40% reservation in technical education for these communities, we will not be quiet,” he cautioned.
Das declared a plan for statewide agitation, saying, “If our demands are unmet, protests will occur in every block and district. On May 22–23, Congress members will conduct a satyagraha in front of the Chief Minister’s residence. On the 23rd, a public meeting will follow where we will outline our next steps.”
He also announced that a statewide Odisha Bandh regarding this issue will be revealed soon.
The Odisha Cabinet approved a proposal on Wednesday afternoon to introduce 11.25% reservation for SEBC students in state Public Universities and Government and Aided Higher Secondary and Higher Education institutions, starting from the academic year 2025-26.
