Srinagar, April 4 (NationPress) The government led by Omar Abdullah issued a warning to the Centre on Friday regarding efforts to undermine the elected administration in Jammu and Kashmir.
During a significant press briefing following a meeting of legislators from the National Conference-led coalition government, MLA Zadibal and NC spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq stated, “We are not merely here to approve documents. Our collaboration with the Lt. Governor and the Centre should not be misinterpreted.
“The government must respect the people’s mandate. We have passed resolutions urging the Government of India (GOI) to honor the will of the populace. Although we maintain a friendly relationship with the L-G, this should not be seen as a sign of weakness. We strive to uphold dignity in governance, but this should not be construed as our vulnerability,” he added.
During the meeting, the coalition partners adopted two resolutions. One resolution opposes the Waqf Amendment Bill, describing it as a measure aimed at Muslims and other minorities within the nation.
The second resolution asserts that the Centre must honor the democratic mandate of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, stressing that the role of an elected government should not be overlooked.
In remarks to the press, Congress MLA Nizamuddin Bhat stated, “The integrity of the legislature must be maintained. New Delhi cannot govern the region through bureaucratic edicts while disregarding the voices of those elected by the populace.”
The meeting was attended by NC President Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and NC legislators, including ministers, as well as coalition partners such as Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
However, Congress Chief Tariq Hameed Karra and party assembly leader G.A. Mir were absent from the meeting.
This meeting was convened by CM Omar Abdullah in response to the transfer of 48 JKAS officers by the Lt. Governor.
The NC government has labeled this as an intrusion into governance affairs.
Sources close to Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha indicated that since the transfer orders involve officers wielding magisterial powers related to law and order, they fall directly under the jurisdiction of the L-G office.
