Chandigarh, June 30 (NationPress) Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Cheema criticized the hypocrisy and opportunism of opposition leaders, particularly from the Congress and BJP, regarding their positions on the drug trade in the state.

He released a video highlighting how these leaders, who once condemned alleged drug kingpins such as the imprisoned Akali leader Bikram Majithia, are now defending him as the AAP government takes strong action against him.

Cheema informed the media that between 2007 and 2017, Punjab faced a significant increase in drug trafficking and the proliferation of substances like ‘chitta’ (synthetic drugs), heroin, and smack.

“This dark chapter in our state’s history, overshadowed by the rampant drug trade, is closely associated with the governance of the Akali-BJP alliance. Now, as the AAP administration enforces strict measures against these criminals, the same opposition figures who once vowed to eradicate drugs from Punjab are shamelessly supporting those engaged in this vile trade,” Cheema stated.

He emphasized that during the Akali Dal and BJP's rule, Punjab’s youth fell victim to the devastating effects of drugs.

“History will record the first instance when Punjab’s youth, many of whom sought refuge abroad to escape this crisis, were systematically ruined by this drug trade, which was not only overlooked but actively promoted by previous administrations,” Cheema remarked.

He also pointed out that key opposition members had previously called for action against Majithia, yet now they are attempting to protect him.

Cheema specifically mentioned Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa, who pledged in 2016 to take action against Majithia and others, only to reverse his position and defend him today.

“In 2016, Bajwa publicly declared that if the Congress came to power, they would drag Bikram Majithia and other accused through the streets, yet today he refers to Majithia as a ‘clean’ individual,” Cheema urged, calling on Bajwa to clarify his inconsistent stance.

Moreover, he highlighted statements from Congress figures like Sukhpal Singh Khaira and former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, who had previously accused Majithia of drug trafficking, but are now backtracking.

“Khaira and Channi once labeled Majithia as a ‘drug lord’ and demanded strict measures against him. Now, when the AAP government is seeking justice, they choose to defend him. This is nothing short of opportunism and a betrayal of the people of Punjab,” the AAP leader concluded.
