Chennai, Nov 23 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu Minister for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, M.R.K. Panneerselvam, has accused opposition parties of intentionally disseminating false information regarding paddy procurement during the Kuruvai season, claiming they are trying to politicize a complicated issue linked to climate-related challenges.
During a press meeting on Saturday at the Secretariat, the Minister noted that unseasonal rainfall, a consequence of climate change, had created obstacles for Kuruvai farming this year.
Nevertheless, he emphasized that the state government's proactive measures—ranging from financial aid to timely water release—have significantly assisted farmers in lessening the adverse effects.
Panneerselvam highlighted various initiatives taken by the state for farmer welfare, including a ₹214-crore Kuruvai package scheme, subsidies for farming inputs, and the prompt opening of the Mettur dam for irrigation.
“Thanks to these coordinated efforts, paddy production has seen a threefold increase compared to previous years,” he stated.
In a comparison of procurement statistics, the Minister criticized the AIADMK's decade in power for only procuring 1.79 crore metric tonnes of paddy, while the DMK government has already procured 1.93 crore metric tonnes since taking office in 2021.
“These figures are telling. The Opposition is spreading misleading claims to confuse farmers,” he asserted.
He also criticized the Union government, alleging that the Centre has denied Tamil Nadu's request to blend fortified rice and has not raised the allowable moisture levels for paddy procurement, a crucial demand amid widespread rainfall.
“After rejecting the moisture level increase, the Prime Minister participated in a natural farming conference. This is nothing short of a double standard on matters affecting farmers,” he claimed.
Panneerselvam stressed that the state has provided substantial financial aid to farmers, settling crop insurance claims worth ₹5,997 crore over the last four years, benefiting 37 lakh farmers.
Additionally, ₹1,692 crore has been allocated as disaster relief to 20 lakh farmers during the same timeframe.
Regarding recent crop losses due to heavy rains, the Minister noted that 4,893 hectares had been impacted, affecting 4,667 farmers.
The Chief Minister will soon announce compensation for the farmers impacted.
He assured that fertilizer supplies in Tamil Nadu are more than sufficient, with strict monitoring in place to ensure equitable distribution across all districts.
