Chennai, Nov 17 (NationPress) A low-pressure system that emerged over the southwest Bay of Bengal near the Sri Lankan coast has gained strength. It is anticipated to head towards Tamil Nadu, leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Chennai to issue an Orange Alert for seven districts, signaling the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall on Monday.
The IMD reported that this weather system, which formed on Sunday morning, remains active in the same area. Weather forecasts suggest that it will likely shift west-northwest in the next 24 hours, resulting in considerable rainfall across various parts of Tamil Nadu.
In the 24-hour period ending Monday morning, Thirparappu in Kanyakumari district recorded the highest rainfall at 6 cm. This was followed by 4 cm in Sembanarkoil (Mayiladuthurai district) and 3 cm in Parangipettai (Cuddalore district).
As the system continues to strengthen, the IMD has predicted moderate thunderstorms along with light to moderate rainfall for numerous coastal and interior districts today.
On Tuesday, similar weather with thunder and lightning is expected in the southern and northern districts.
The districts under the Orange Alert include Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and the Karaikal region due to the forecast of extremely heavy rainfall on Monday.
Residents in these areas are urged to exercise caution, avoid flooded zones, and adhere to guidance issued by local authorities.
Additionally, heavy rainfall is expected today in Cuddalore, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and the Union Territory of Puducherry. The IMD has also forecasted heavy rainfall for the southern districts of Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, and Theni on Tuesday.
Chennai and its suburbs are likely to experience overcast conditions throughout the day, with several locations potentially receiving heavy to very heavy rainfall.
The city corporation has activated its field teams to manage potential waterlogging, while residents are advised to limit unnecessary travel during peak rainfall.
With the northeast monsoon in full swing and atmospheric conditions conducive to heavy precipitation, the IMD remains vigilant in monitoring the situation. Authorities have encouraged the public to stay informed through official weather updates and take appropriate precautions.
