New Delhi, Dec 4 (NationPress) In a remarkable achievement, more than 17 lakh silver jewellery items have received hallmark certification in a mere three months after the government enforced the mandatory Hallmarking Unique Identification (HUID) for all hallmarked silver pieces. This initiative reflects a robust response from both jewellers and consumers, according to an official announcement made on Thursday.
Although silver hallmarking remains a voluntary practice, the Bureau of Indian Standards has mandated HUID marking for any silver article that is hallmarked.
The increase in hallmarking activity follows the launch of the HUID on September 1, 2025, particularly noteworthy as only approximately 32 lakh silver articles were hallmarked during the financial year 2024–25.
Purity grades of 925 and 800 account for nearly 90 percent of all hallmarked jewellery, as stated by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution.
Regional analysis reveals that the southern part of the country leads in hallmarking volumes, succeeded by the western and eastern regions, with payals (anklets) forming the largest segment. Most of these are hallmarked in the 800 purity grade.
Following anklets, silver diyas are also prominent in the product share, typically available in both 800 and 925 purity grades.
Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Pralhad Joshi, remarked, "The implementation of HUID in silver jewellery hallmarking signifies a crucial advancement in ensuring purity assurance and combating counterfeit hallmarking practices. With HUID now compulsory for voluntarily (BIS) hallmarked silver articles, each item is affixed with a unique 6-digit identification code, ensuring complete digital traceability and improved consumer protection," he shared in a post on X.
With over 17.35 lakh articles already certified under the HUID scheme, this initiative is fostering greater transparency, accountability, and consumer confidence, he added.
The HUID is a laser-marked code on each hallmarked silver item, in addition to the BIS Standard Mark, the term SILVER, and the purity grade.
Consumers can quickly verify the authenticity of hallmarked silver jewellery by entering the HUID on the free BIS CARE mobile app, accessible on both Android and iOS platforms, supporting 12 languages.
