Guwahati, Oct 14 (NationPress) The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) boasts a total network of 7,362 track kilometres, with over 90 percent of this network already electrified, according to high-ranking officials.
During a meeting held in Guwahati, NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava discussed the electrification progress with Members of Parliament (MPs) representing constituencies served by the Rangiya and Lumding divisions.
Currently, the NFR operates a railway network that spans 7,362 track kilometres, with several new line projects underway to further enhance this extensive network.
Mr. Shrivastava highlighted the impressive strides made towards achieving 100 percent railway electrification.
"Over 90 percent of the network has been electrified, allowing prestigious trains like the Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express and Naharlagun–New Delhi Express to operate with complete electric traction," he stated.
Additionally, significant infrastructure improvements have been made, including the completion of double-line work on crucial sections such as New Bongaigaon–Agthori, New Bongaigaon–Azara, and Guwahati–Lumding. Doubling up to New Tinsukia has also been approved.
A new bridge over the Brahmaputra River near the existing Saraighat Bridge and a third line between Kamakhya and Guwahati have also been sanctioned for construction.
The General Manager pointed out that the NFR operates one of the most intricate rail networks in the nation, navigating through challenging hilly terrains and featuring the highest number of tunnels, bridges, and the longest elephant corridors in the Indian Railways system.
Among the recent achievements, Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, has been connected to the railway network for the first time, and freight operations have begun from Molvom railway station in Nagaland.
Moreover, the NFR is integrating modern AI-driven technologies to enhance infrastructure safety, passenger comfort, and wildlife preservation.
Station upgrades under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme are currently in progress at 92 stations across the NFR, including 60 stations in the Northeast.
Haibargaon railway station in Assam has proudly become the first Amrit station in the Northeast, inaugurated recently by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A total of 11 MPs from four Northeastern states—Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Manipur—attended the meeting.
The Divisional Railway Managers of Rangiya and Lumding, Anant Sadashiva and Samir Lohani respectively, along with senior officials from the NFR Headquarters in Maligaon, were also present.
This meeting was coordinated by Anurag Agarwal, Deputy General Manager of NFR.
NFR's Chief Public Relations Officer, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, mentioned that the purpose of the meeting was to inform the MPs about the development initiatives undertaken by the NFR and to solicit constructive feedback from public representatives for enhanced service delivery.
The MPs engaged in a fruitful interactive session with NFR senior officials, providing valuable suggestions regarding railway connectivity improvements, station upgrades, and the preservation of heritage railway assets, according to the CPRO.
The General Manager recognized these suggestions and assured their implementation where feasible.
The NFR operates throughout the Northeastern states, as well as in seven districts of West Bengal and five districts of Bihar.
