Bhubaneswar, May 23 (NationPress) Esteemed sand artist and Padma Shri recipient Sudarsan Pattnaik penned a letter to Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday, urging the state government to implement measures aimed at standardizing the global celebration dates of Ratha Yatra. He also called for intervention regarding the persistent use of the name "Jagannath Dham" for the newly established Digha Jagannath Temple in West Bengal.
In his correspondence, Pattnaik voiced his worries about the increasing trend among organizations, especially the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), to host Snana Yatra and Ratha Yatra festivities abroad on dates that differ from those recognized by Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri.
“While we genuinely appreciate their devotion and zeal, I respectfully request that you take necessary actions to inspire these organizations to celebrate these sacred events in accordance with the traditional dates outlined by the Puri Jagannath Temple calendar,” Pattnaik stated in his letter.
He also mentioned that despite previous discussions by the temple administration with these groups, the discrepancies continue.
"Ratha Yatra is more than just a festival; it represents a significant spiritual tradition and an essential emblem of our cultural identity. Observing it on a synchronized date globally will enhance the spiritual connection among Jagannath followers and preserve the sanctity of this holy event," Pattnaik emphasized.
The sand artist appreciated the Odisha CM’s previous efforts to contact his counterpart in West Bengal regarding the naming of a project in Digha as "Jagannath Dham".
Nevertheless, as the designation remains unchanged, he urged for further action to uphold the cultural and religious importance linked to Lord Jagannath.
Pattnaik concluded his letter by expressing gratitude to the Chief Minister for his dedication to promoting Odisha’s rich heritage and made a humble request to protect Mahaprabhu Jagannath’s legacy, both within and outside the state’s borders.
Notably, ISKCON has recently sparked controversy by announcing plans to hold Ratha Yatra events in London on alternate dates.
