This green initiative, launched under the auspices of DEPwD in partnership with Legrand India, signifies a crucial step toward environmental conservation and the adoption of renewable energy.
Highlighting that this solar power project symbolizes our shared dedication to sustainability, Secretary Aggarwal stated, "This solar power facility represents a significant leap toward achieving energy self-sufficiency and supports the Government of India’s goals to advance clean energy initiatives, fostering both ecological and economic advantages." He also commended Legrand India’s involvement, noting that this initiative serves as a robust model for other institutions to adopt green energy, paving the pathway for a sustainable future.
In her address to the faculty and students, Richa Shankar, Deputy Director General of DEPwD, encouraged them to improve the quality of services offered to individuals with disabilities. Situated in ITO, PDUNIPPD stands as a top-tier institution delivering rehabilitation and therapy services for persons with disabilities and the general public.
Additionally, it offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in rehabilitation, affiliated with the University of Delhi and recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India, serving over 700 students. PDUNIPPD operates as an autonomous organization under the management and financial oversight of the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India.
The institute was initially founded in 1960 as a non-government entity known as the Institute for the Physically Handicapped (IPH) by the Society for Crippled and Handicapped. It was established when the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and other related institutions, managed by the Council for the Aid of Crippled and Handicapped, were taken over by the Government of India on May 22, 1975.
It became an autonomous body in 1976 and was registered as a society under the Societies Registration Act of 1860.
In 2002, the institute was renamed to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Institute for the Physically Handicapped (PDUIPH) and later in 2016 to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Persons with Physical Disabilities (Divyangjan).
