PM Modi Commemorates Goa Liberation Day with Nation

New Delhi, Dec 19 (NationPress) Goa Liberation Day is annually observed on this date to honor the end of Portuguese colonial dominance in the state and its integration into India in 1961. This event carries profound historical importance as it signifies the conclusion of the long-lasting struggle for Goa's freedom.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the lead in paying heartfelt homage on this day. In a message shared on X, he expressed his deep respect for the heroes of the liberation struggle. He remarked, “Today, on Goa Liberation Day, we remember the courage and resolve of the remarkable women and men who participated in the movement to liberate Goa. Their valor inspires us to persist in our endeavors for the upliftment of Goa and the welfare of its people.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also conveyed his greetings on this significant occasion. He stated, “Wishing the people of Goa a happy Goa Liberation Day. This is a day that recognizes the unyielding spirit of patriotism and freedom that enabled them to embrace their identity as proud Indians. I pay my solemn tributes to the great souls who made the ultimate sacrifice in this struggle.”

Goa's Chief Minister Pramod Sawant also honored the freedom fighters on this day. He remarked, “On the historic occasion of Goa Liberation Day, I had the honor of hoisting the National Flag at the Goa University Ground, Taleigao. My heartfelt tributes go to the valiant Freedom Fighters who selflessly gave their lives and tirelessly fought to liberate Goa from colonial oppression. Their bravery and commitment continue to motivate us to uphold the principles of freedom and justice.”

The state of Goa, renowned for its vibrant culture and breathtaking landscapes, has arranged a variety of events and activities to pay tribute to the sacrifices made by freedom fighters. These events also celebrate the distinct cultural identity of the state. The day features ceremonies, parades, cultural showcases, and exhibitions that highlight Goa's rich heritage and history.

Goa Liberation Day serves not only as a reminder of the fight for freedom but also as a chance to celebrate the state’s advancement and unity within the broader tapestry of India.

Goa was colonized by the Portuguese in 1510 and remained under their control for 451 years. Unlike other regions of India, Goa was still a Portuguese territory even after India achieved independence from British rule in 1947.

The movement for liberation stemmed from small-scale revolts and uprisings in the 19th century and gained momentum from 1940 to 1961. This movement unfolded both within and outside Goa, characterized by various strategies including non-violent protests, revolutionary actions, and diplomatic initiatives. Ultimately, Portuguese control came to an end when India invaded and annexed Goa in 1961.
