What Opportunities Does PM Modi's Three-Nation Tour Present?

New Delhi, June 15 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued an official statement on Sunday as he prepared for his three-nation journey to Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia. He emphasized that this trip presents a vital opportunity to enhance global consensus on addressing terrorism in all its forms.

On his official X account, Prime Minister Modi stated: "Today, I embark on a three-nation tour to the Republic of Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia. From June 15-16, I will be in the Republic of Cyprus at the invitation of President Nikos Christodoulides. Cyprus is a close ally and a pivotal partner in the Mediterranean region and the EU. This visit will strengthen our historical ties and foster collaboration in trade, investment, security, technology, and enhance people-to-people connections."

"Following my visit to Cyprus, I will head to Kananaskis, Canada, to participate in the G7 Summit at the invitation of Prime Minister Mark Carney," the Prime Minister noted in his X statement.

"The Summit will create a platform for discussing urgent global issues and the needs of the Global South. I eagerly anticipate engaging with leaders from allied nations," he added.

"On June 18, I am excited to visit the Republic of Croatia and hold discussions with President Zoran Milanovic and Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic. Our countries share centuries-old cultural ties. This first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Croatia will pave the way for new avenues of bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest," he continued.

This three-nation tour also serves as a means to express gratitude to partner countries for their unwavering support to India in combating cross-border terrorism and to enhance global understanding on the issue, PM Modi stated.

"I will attend the G7 Summit in Canada, which will provide an excellent platform to discuss various global issues and highlight the priorities of the Global South," PM Modi earlier mentioned on X.

"My visit to Croatia, marking my first as an Indian Prime Minister, is a significant opportunity to strengthen ties with a valued partner country," the Prime Minister expressed.

PM Modi will officially visit Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia from June 15 to 19, as indicated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday.

Before attending the G7 Summit on Monday, PM Modi will make a historic visit to Cyprus, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in over two decades.

Manish, the High Commissioner of India to Cyprus, commented, "This visit will be historic for several reasons. It's the first time in over two decades that an Indian Prime Minister is visiting, and we anticipate significant outcomes in trade, technology, tourism, and investment. Discussions will also cover defense and security cooperation, business relations, people-to-people contact, and global as well as regional matters..."

"At the invitation of President Nikos Christodoulides, PM Modi will officially visit Cyprus on June 15-16, marking the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in over 20 years," the MEA stated.

In Nicosia, PM Modi will meet with Christodoulides and address business leaders in Limassol.

Cyprus condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and indicated it would raise the issue of cross-border terrorism from Pakistan during EU-level discussions.

The visit is timely as Cyprus is set to assume the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026.

This trip will reaffirm the commitment of both nations to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen India's engagement with the Mediterranean region and the European Union, according to the MEA.

PM Modi is scheduled to visit Cyprus on June 15-16, before heading to Canada for the G7 Summit on June 16-17, and concluding his five-day journey with an official visit to Croatia on June 18.

During the second part of his trip, PM Modi will travel to Kananaskis to participate in the G7 Summit, marking his sixth consecutive attendance. On June 6, PM Modi received a call from Canadian PM Carney inviting him to the summit.

While PM Modi is scheduled to meet with his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney, other bilateral engagements are still being finalized, as official sources noted.

PM Modi is also expected to meet with US President Donald Trump for the first time since their February meeting.

The visit to Cyprus is particularly significant in light of India's ongoing tensions with Turkey due to its support for Pakistan.

Ankara’s recognition of the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the northern region, seized by Turkish forces in 1974, along with disputes over gas exploration in the Eastern Mediterranean, continues to fuel tensions between Turkey and Cyprus.

PM Modi is expected to arrive in Canada on June 16, a day after the G7 Summit begins.

This will mark PM Modi's sixth consecutive participation in the G7 Summit.

"At the summit, the PM will discuss crucial global issues, including energy security, technology, and innovation, especially regarding the AI-energy nexus and quantum-related matters," the government announced.

For the final segment of his tour, PM Modi will undertake an official visit to Croatia on June 18.

This historic visit will be the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Croatia, highlighting a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship.

"The visit to Croatia will also emphasize India’s commitment to enhancing its cooperation with partners in the European Union," the government stated.
