New Delhi, April 21 (NationPress) On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored Adi Shankaracharya on his Jayanti, reflecting on the philosopher’s enduring teachings of Advaita Vedanta (non-dualism) and their ongoing impact on spiritual beliefs and human values.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister expressed, “On the blessed occasion of Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti, I pay my respects to one of India’s most significant spiritual figures. His deep teachings, philosophies, and the principles of Advaita Vedanta continue to guide countless individuals around the world. He highlighted the importance of harmony, discipline, and the unity of all existence.”
Modi further acknowledged the lasting significance of Adi Shankaracharya's contributions, stating, “His initiatives to rejuvenate spiritual thought and establish centers of spirituality throughout the nation serve as a timeless inspiration. May his wisdom continue to guide us towards truth, compassion, and collective well-being.”
Adi Shankaracharya is celebrated as a monumental figure in Indian philosophy for his role in consolidating the principles of non-dualism, or Advaita Vedanta, within Hinduism.
Born in Kalady, now part of Kerala, he renounced worldly life early on to become a 'sanyasi' and is believed to have achieved enlightenment at a young age.
He authored significant commentaries on key Hindu texts, including the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Brahma Sutras, which are still widely studied and revered today. His philosophical insights laid the groundwork for a cohesive spiritual framework that underscores the unity of the individual soul with universal consciousness.
Adi Shankaracharya also founded four key monastic centers, or mathas, across various regions of India — Sringeri in the south, Dwarka in the west, Puri in the east, and Jyotirmath in the north — to foster spiritual education and preserve the tradition.
Earlier, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also recognized the esteemed spiritual leader on social media, stating, “On the Jayanti of Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya Ji, the forerunner of Advaita Vedanta, who revitalized Indian culture, philosophy, and spiritual traditions on a global scale, I extend millions of salutations.”
“His ascetic life continues to inspire the world today, encouraging the pursuit of truth, knowledge, and self-realization,” the Chief Minister added.
