PM Modi inaugurates Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav, interacts with hologram of Swami Chinmayananda
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, 23 October 2026, inaugurated the Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav Global Sammelan at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, and held a holographic interaction with the late spiritual leader Swami Chinmayananda — an emotional moment that took the Prime Minister back to his personal meeting with the saint in 1993.
A Holographic Reunion Across Decades
The centrepiece of the inauguration was a technology-enabled exchange in which PM Modi conversed with a holographic avatar of Swami Chinmayananda, seeking the spiritual leader's blessings. Modi told the avatar: 'It was my great fortune that I met you, and today I want you to bless me for the work I wish to do.'
The holographic avatar responded with an expression of happiness at seeing Modi rise to the country's highest office, conveying: 'India is with you, Narendra.' Modi described the experience as deeply moving, saying, 'Seeing the divine presence of Chinmaya Ji through his hologram, I felt as if I had travelled back 33 years.'
Modi Recalls His 1993 Meeting With Swami Chinmayananda
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi recounted his first — and last — meeting with the spiritual leader, which took place around February or March 1993. Modi had met Swami Chinmayananda to personally invite him to the World Parliament of Religions' centenary celebrations in Chicago, scheduled for 11 September 1993.
The spiritual leader accepted the invitation, but passed away on 3 August 1993, weeks before the event. Modi said he was present at the Chicago gathering and felt the leader's absence keenly. Reflecting on that last conversation, the Prime Minister said its central theme was 'building youth power and, through it, building a strong and capable India.'
Modi further noted: 'A few years after meeting him, the people blessed me with the opportunity to serve as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Since then, for the past 25 years, I have continuously served the country as head of government to the best of my ability. Gurudev's blessings have been with me throughout this journey.'
About the Global Sammelan and the Chinmaya Mission's 75-Year Journey
The three-day Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav Global Sammelan, running from 23 to 25 October 2026, is expected to draw more than 9,000 participants from India and abroad. The event marks the culmination of a year-long celebration commemorating 75 years of the Chinmaya Mission, founded by Swami Chinmayananda in 1951 to make the teachings of Vedanta and the Bhagavad Gita accessible to all.
Describing the occasion, PM Modi said the word 'Chinmaya' symbolised immortality, making the gathering at Bharat Mandapam particularly significant. He added: 'The Chinmaya Mission is not merely an institution; it represents Chinmaya Vichar.'
Year-Long Celebrations: Key Initiatives
The centenary year saw a wide range of activities. Notably, the celebrations began with PM Modi releasing a Tamil versification of the Bhagavad Gita — produced by the Chinmaya Mission with music composed by Ilaiyaraaja — at Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Tamil Nadu.
Other highlights included mass havans at multiple locations, the consecration of the Maa Soundarya Chinmayi Temple in Tripura, and the Chinmaya Gita Samarpanam, under which more than one lakh people worldwide chanted the 15th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita together online. An initiative called Gita Panchamrit focused on five selected verses from the Gita. In addition, 15 young members of the Chinmaya Yuva Kendra undertook the Chinmaya Amrit Yatra, travelling more than 40,000 km across India to spread the Gita's teachings.
What the Sammelan Signals
The event brings renewed attention to the Chinmaya Mission's expanding footprint in spiritual education, cultural preservation, youth empowerment, and community service. The use of holographic technology to recreate the presence of a revered spiritual figure is being seen as a landmark moment in how India's religious and cultural institutions engage with modern audiences. The Global Sammelan continues through 25 October 2026.
