Patna, Sep 15 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the highly anticipated Purnea airport in Bihar on Monday, addressing a long-standing demand from the residents of the Seemanchal and Kosi regions.

During the ceremony, the Prime Minister also launched the inaugural commercial flight of IndiGo from Purnea, officially marking the district's entry into India’s aviation sector.

The airport, which was built at a cost of approximately Rs 40,000 crore, is expected to significantly enhance connectivity in eastern Bihar and stimulate economic growth in the area.

Future expansion plans include connecting Purnea with major cities like Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Mumbai, in addition to already announced flights to Ahmedabad and Kolkata.

The Prime Minister, who arrived at the venue slightly delayed due to a previous engagement in Kolkata, received a warm welcome accompanied by cultural performances and traditional dances.

He was joined by Civil Aviation Minister N. Ram Mohan Naidu, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy CMs Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, along with several Union and state ministers.

Upon his arrival with CM Nitish Kumar and the deputy chief ministers, PM Modi was honored with a garland made from makhana by BJP state president Dilip Jaiswal.

In addition to the airport, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the new Araria–Galgalia–Thakurganj railway line, valued at Rs 4,410 crore.

He also flagged off the Jogbani–Danapur Vande Bharat Express, Jogbani–Erode Amrit Bharat Express, and Saharsa–Amritsar Amrit Bharat Express.

The Prime Minister laid the foundation for the Vikramshila–Katariya railway line, estimated at Rs 2,170 crore, as well as a 2400 MW Thermal Power Project in Bhagalpur worth Rs 25,000 crore, the Kosi–Mechi Interstate River Link Project (Phase 1) at Rs 2,680 crore, and Namami Gange projects in Bhagalpur, which include STPs, interception and diversion projects, and drinking water initiatives for Darbhanga, Katihar, and Bhagalpur.

Under the housing and social development initiative, PM Modi distributed keys to beneficiaries under the PM Awas Yojana for 40,920 families. These homes were constructed at a cost of Rs 603 crore. He also announced a community investment fund of Rs 500 crore, established the National Makhana Board to support Bihar’s traditional makhana farmers, and inaugurated a Semen Bank facility in Purnea, built at a cost of Rs 64 crore.
