Chandigarh, Sep 15 (NationPress) BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh criticized the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday for what he labeled as 'shedding crocodile tears' concerning the severe flood crisis in Punjab and for engaging in cheap politics during this calamity.
Following Rahul Gandhi's visit to the flood-affected areas, Chugh remarked that while countless Punjabis were grappling to save their homes, fields, and families, Gandhi was enjoying his time elsewhere.
'Now that the waters have begun to recede, and people are assessing their losses, he has suddenly emerged for a mere photo opportunity,' Chugh stated.
He questioned why prominent Congress figures, including the Gandhi family and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, remained silent for over a month as Punjab faced its worst floods in recent history.
'This indifference is not a new phenomenon. It reflects the same callous and insensitive behavior that the Congress has historically exhibited towards Punjab—dating back to the tragic days of Operation Bluestar and beyond,' Chugh remarked.
The BJP leader pointed out that Rahul Gandhi's sudden concern only surfaced after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Punjab, surveyed the flood-impacted regions, and assured timely assistance to the affected families.
'Rahul's delayed act is merely an attempt to gain cheap political points, adding insult to the injuries of suffering Punjabis,' Chugh added.
He emphasized that Congress should refrain from exploiting the tragedies of Punjab for political theatrics.
'At a time when the people of Punjab require genuine relief and rehabilitation, Rahul Gandhi's actions bring shame to the state through his hypocrisy and empty gestures,' Chugh stated.
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi shared a message on X, stating, 'Today, I met with the villagers in Ghonewal - ruined homes, destroyed fields, shattered lives. Their pain is evident, yet their resolve remains unbroken.'
He insisted that both state and Central governments must ensure that relief packages and compensation reach victims promptly, as they are in dire need at this time.
Punjab BJP spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal had earlier questioned the timing of Rahul Gandhi's visit to Punjab, suggesting it appeared more like a political spectacle than genuine concern for the flood-affected population.
He highlighted that the Central government under PM Modi has already allocated Rs 1,600 crore in immediate relief to Punjab, in addition to the Rs 12,000 crore available with the state under the State Disaster Response Fund.
Baliawal noted that BJP-led states such as Delhi, Gujarat, Goa, and Haryana have contributed Rs 5 crore each to the Punjab Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Moreover, various BJP administrations have sent thousands of trucks and train wagons with essential supplies for flood victims.
He urged Rahul Gandhi to explain why Congress-ruled states have shown indifference and apathy towards the suffering of Punjab.
